Wired | The Future of Robotics

Wired | The Future of Robotics

What is a robot? The answer might surprise you. In the next few years, we're going to start seeing robots that make decisions entirely on their own - fully autonomous robots. Many fear that these kind of robots will breed dangerous results: can we trust a robot that makes all decisions for us? Or should humans and robots share the control? In our documentary for WIRED we explore the future of robotics, covering the good, the bad and the downright scary.

Interviews with some of the country's best and brightest minds in the world of robotics come together with animation and stock to take a long hard look at this complicated subject.

Post Office | Save Our Cash

Up to 8 million people rely on cash daily, but access to cash is rapidly declining. Bank branches and free to use ATMs are fast disappearing across the UK every day. The Big Sky were tasked by Bold Space to make a portfolio of six films for the Post Office to help re-inspire the use of cash and to highlight it's importance in every community. Filmed from Hasting's Pier to Primrose Hill we profiled some fascinating individuals to highlight why cash is so vital to them.

BBC Storyworks | Barbados

BBC Storyworks | Barbados

The BBC invited us to draw attention to the rise of sargassum - a rogue seaweed, blooming thanks to climate change - which is decimating biodiversity, the tourist industry and local fishing communities across the Caribbean. In this Storyworks film, we discover the extent of the issue, and look to the future to see how both communities and regional universities are acting to find practical and entrepreneurial solutions to the problem.

Wired | De-Extinction

Wired | De-Extinction

Extinction is a fact of life as 99% of things that ever lived are extinct. However, as we know, the ratio and scale in which extinction is happening nowadays has been drastically increased by human activity. With that in mind, teams of scientists around the world are working with different methods on what has been excitingly called De-Extinction - the science of bringing species back from extinction. In this film for WIRED, we go on a journey to find out not only how these miracles are performed but also their ethical implications.

A huge amount of work went into researching this fascinating and inspiring subject. The Big Sky crew shot the interviews over two days with a small Covid safe crew on RED Gemini, and over zoom calls. Although making the film at the height of the pandemic had it's challenges, we had a lot of fun experimenting with animation, archive and all sorts of creative devices to bring this science-heavy subject to life. We like to think there is a more-ish watchability from beginning to end which may be attributed to Director, Bruno Chiecco's creative vision and to the dedication of our editors, one of whom suggests that, due to the intensity of the edit, his hairline may have retreated substantially - a great loss to his species.
