Not A Pet | Impact Film

Every year countless animals are stolen from the wild, decimating the dwindling populations of some of the worlds most iconic animals. From cheetahs to parrots, tortoises to chimpanzees, few species are safe from the illegal pet trade. The internet has not only made this black market more accessible for buyers, but it has also made it harder for enforcement agencies to crack down. Investigating this cruel industry and the role social media plays in fuelling demand, Not A Pet seeks to expose this shocking trade through 5 thought-provoking episodes: Primates, Cheetahs, Birds, Tigers, and Reptiles & Amphibians.

The first in the series, ‘Cheetahs’ was originally a short film which premiered at Jackson Wild, where it was a finalist in the ‘Best Micro Film’ category. It has since screened at multiple international film festivals championing social awareness and conservation. It won the ‘Best Short' award at the Shout Out for Animals Film Festival and the London Independent Film Awards.

Our intention is to make this behaviour socially unacceptable and begin to turn the tide. Using the hashtag #NotAPet, we hope to turn social media to our advantage and change public behaviour.

WILD x RED | The Call of the Sky

"Inspired by living in London, noticing birds fly overhead and wanting to follow, this journey from the city is an exploration of what birdwatching means to me"

Jack Wylson - one of The Big Sky founders - was nominated for the WILDxRED challenge, a collaboration between RED Digital Cinema cameras and National Geographic. Seven filmmakers from around the world were selected to ‘reinvent wildlife filmmaking’ using the new 8k Red Weapon movie camera. The resulting film ‘The Call of the Sky’ was a finalist in the competition and screened at Jackson Hole Wild, in Wyoming.

Filmed along the southern coast of Ireland this poetic, existential take on birds and birdwatching was inspired by the writing of Peter Matthiessen and J. A. Baker and shot in the vein of a surf movie.

In this Storyworks film, we discover the extent of the issue, and look to the future to see how both communities and regional universities are acting to find practical and entrepreneurial solutions to the problem.
